It was probably only a matter of time before the internet delivered its first #Hashgasm. Stunt props go to Chilean sex toy company Japi, who in a live broadcast this week revealed their social media driven vibrator via a live broadcast. This NSFW webcast involved asking viewers to tweet with a specific hashtag (#JapiSex) to control the device being sampled by a reporter who agreed to be filmed in a hot tub, using the device.
Fans and followers (over 1100 of them) tweeted to activate and control the device, bringing new meaning to the phrases “building buzz”…
and then of course, “peak activity”.
We have not verified if the device was indeed powered by the hashtag, nor do we have additional information about the company, JapiJane and individuals apparently involved in this campaign, but regardless, must give props for the creativity of this stunt. The event delivered over 13 million timeline impressions and boasted a reach of 5 million. It will undoubtedly inspire copycat events, products and news.
In a social media climate where Twitter and hashtags are being criticized as a conduit for terrorist messaging, this clever campaign is somewhat refreshing. It is the 21st century equivalent of “Make Love, Not War”.
