World Cup Hashtags

Even if you’re not a Soccer fan, you know that the FIFA World Cup games are taking place in Brazil. The matches will run through the middle of July and each country’s fans have taken to Twitter to cheer for their team, using 3-letter Hashtags like these: #CRC, #GRE, #MEX, #COL, #NED, #BRA, #UDN, and #USA.

And the Hashtags are flying in as many languages as there are countries playing. Try #WorldCup2014 or #WorldCup in English, and there’s #UDMundial in Spanish.

There’s been more to the games than just players scoring goals, including a very strange biting incident by Luis Suarez, a player for Uruguay. The bite heard round the world – and the subsequent suspension punishment Suarez received – have spawned an entire set of Hashtags, like #Suarez, #Suarezunfair, and #SuarezAfuera, but by far the fan favorite is #Suarezing.

After Sunday’s game in which Mexico lost to the Netherlands, the Dutch Airline @KLM tweeted “Adios Amigos,” which was instantly and universally seen as tasteless and racist. Although the company has since removed the tweet from their feed and has repeatedly apologized, those who are still angry about it are using the Hashtags #KLMracist and #KLMgate.
